Deep Blue Sea Film National Tour - OFFICIAL SCREENING

 Hobart Screening

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea is a film for everyone. Come along, and bring a friend who wouldn't normally watch a film about 'boat people'.

This is the film that Tony and Julia don’t want you to see. That’s why Jessie Taylor and her team are taking the film on a National Road Trip to 30 major cities around Australia, before hosting a screening for our politicians at Parliament House in Canberra on Monday 18th March 2013. And now, it’s coming to a city near you!

WHAT: Come and join us on the Deep Blue Sea Film National Tour in Hobart.

  • Watch a screening of the documentary Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea
  • Engage in a Q&A with our guest speaker panel, including Greg Barns. Greg Barns is a barrister and writer.  He practices in the areas of administrative law (including refugee law) and criminal law.  Greg is immediate Past President of the Australian Lawyers Alliance.  He is a columnist with the Hobart Mercury and writes for The Drum and The Age.  In 2002 Greg was disendorsed by the Liberal Party because of his public criticism of the Party’s policies towards asylum seekers. Greg is the author of three books on Australian politics.

Let’s have a public discussion about asylum seekers and Australia.

National Tour

Synopsis:

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea is a 52 minute documentary looking at the circumstances and decisions that lead someone to become a ‘boat person’.

When she was 9, Zainab’s parents made the heartbreaking decision to leave their home in northern Afghanistan. They set out on a journey across the globe, putting the fate of their family in the hands of strangers. Across borders, behind bars and onto a smuggler’s boat – the family chased freedom. Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea tells Zainab’s story, and the story of many others who have trodden the same path.

Jessie Taylor and Ali Reza Sadiqi travelled across Indonesia and met with 250 asylum seekers in jails, detention centres and hostels. Through candid interviews, hidden camera footage and in the words of asylum seekers themselves, the story of the ‘refugee’ is told. What pushes people to leave home? What do they leave behind? What do they fear? Why did they choose this path? And what does it take to turn someone into a ‘boat person’?

Meet the human faces behind the most controversial issue of our time.
